Sump Pumps

A sump pump is designed to operate underwater and is installed in a pit in the basement of your house, preferably in an area such as a crawl space or a utility room. The pump will then dispense water at a predetermined level from your property and be disposed of in a storm drain or a well.

This small but essential addition to your home helps prevent your basement from flooding. To keep basements, crawl spaces, and other areas underneath a home dry, sump pumps can be an indispensable asset to your home.

A sump pump usually remains idle, waiting for the water to rise to a predetermined level that needs to be pumped. When heavy rainfall occurs, the soil surrounding your home becomes overly saturated. The excess groundwater starts flowing towards the sump pit, causing it to fill with water gradually. This action triggers the sump pump float switch, activating the pump.

The sump pump extracts water from the pit and directs it towards a nearby storm drain, dry well, or pond. This proactive approach prevents the groundwater from reaching the level of your basement floor, which could otherwise lead to flooding. Essentially, a sump pump serves as an additional layer of protection, just like a flood insurance policy!

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF A SUMP PUMP?

Despite its modest cost, investing in a sump pump offers significant benefits. Here's how you can benefit by incorporating a sump pump into your home:

  • Defend your basement against potential flooding.
  • It will preserve the paint's integrity and other wall coverings, preventing peeling.
  • Safeguard basement appliances like washers, dryers, and spare freezers from corrosion.
  • Mitigate the growth of mold, mildew, and fungus.
  • Enhance indoor air quality by creating a drier and more comfortable year-round basement environment.
  • Maintain the structural soundness of your foundation.
  • Attain peace of mind, irrespective of the weather conditions.
  • Fulfill a requirement for homeowner's insurance coverage concerning basement flood damage.

DO YOU REQUIRE A SUMP PUMP FOR YOUR RESIDENCE?

Although the advantages of sump pumps are evident, their necessity varies among properties. We recommend considering sump pump installation if any of the following applies:

  • Do you reside in a climate prone to heavy rain or snowfall ? We experience significant spring storms in Alberta, rendering basements particularly susceptible to flooding.
  • Is your home on a property with inadequate soil drainage, low elevation, or proximity to hills, resulting in a greater risk of rising groundwater levels during heavy precipitation, snowmelt, or spring runoff?
  • Suppose you've encountered water issues previously. If your basement has previously suffered flooding or if you frequently contend with elevated basement moisture levels, installing a sump pump is a wise precaution.
  • Do you have a finished basement? Even if your home isn't classified as high-risk, safeguarding your underground living space with an affordable sump pump is prudent.
